When CWDing wput evaluates the response code from the ftp-server and if this 
is an error-code, wput assumes that for whatever reason it was not able to 
CWD into this directory. For further information you can enable debug-output 
(-d flag) and see what the ftp-server replies. Or try the --relative flag 
which causes wput to use relative CWDs only.
